The appearance of the breasts naturally changes as a woman ages. Breasts lose their youthful shape and firmness over time. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and gravity can also cause the breasts to sag and droop. Breast lift surgery can counteract those effects and let you regain more youthful-looking breasts.
Breast lift, medically known as mastopexy, is a plastic surgery procedure that removes excess breast skin and tightens surrounding tissue to improve breast contour. The procedure does not add volume to the breasts; breast augmentation surgery is needed for that.
You may be a good candidate for a breast lift if you are in good overall health, do not smoke, and have saggy or asymmetrical breasts. You can undergo breast lift surgery anytime after your breasts have fully developed. During your consultation with Dr. Derek Steinbacher, you will be evaluated to decide if you are a good candidate for this procedure or if you need another type of breast surgery.
Dr. Steinbacher will provide you with instructions on how to prepare for your surgery. You may be asked to stop taking medications that may increase your risk of bleeding. It is also important to plan for your recovery as early as possible. If you have kids, be sure to find someone to help while you are recovering.
A Breast Lift procedure usually takes about three hours to complete.
A Mastopexy is done while the patient is under “twilight” anesthesia.
The procedure is done on an outpatient basis. During surgery, extra skin will be removed and the breast tissue lifted to the proper location. If your breast lift is being performed in conjunction with breast augmentation surgery, implants will be inserted prior to closing and bandaging your breasts. Depending on your new breast shape, your nipples may be relocated.
After your surgery, expect to feel uncomfortable for the first few days. Mild pain medication is usually adequate. You may be advised to wear a special bra or special dressing to support your breasts as they recover.
Bandages will be removed during your follow-up visit. The stitches dissolve and do not need to be “pulled” out. Expect the shape and size of your breasts to improve as the days go by.
