Reverse Time with a Brow Lift

A brow lift, also commonly known as the forehead lift or “browplasty,” is a cosmetic procedure that improves the appearance of the upper portion of the face, including the forehead, eyebrows, and upper eyelids. The goal of the brow lift is to create a more youthful, refreshed appearance. Dr. Derek Steinbacher of Guilford, Connecticut, is pleased to offer this and many other facial cosmetic surgeries for patients.

How is the brow lift performed?

There are different techniques and modalities that can be used to perform a brow lift. The type of technique that will be used will depend on the specific goals and concerns of the patient. In some cases, the brow lift can be performed using endoscopic technology. This procedure is less invasive than traditional brow lift surgery and may have a shorter recovery period. An approach via the hairline is also considered and can allow the forehead wrinkles and #11 to be addressed.  Choosing the technique most appropriate for your needs is done with the assistance of Dr. Steinbacher and his team.

Brow lifts can be performed as an outpatient procedure or with an overnight stay in the hospital. The length of this surgery will depend on the technique used; it usually takes about one to two hours to complete.

What can I expect after my procedure?

After a brow lift, patients will need to wear a headband or other type of garment to support the forehead and eyebrows. That will reduce swelling, and most patients can return to their normal activities within one week after surgery. It can take several weeks for all the swelling and bruising to resolve.

How long will the results from a browplasty last?

The results of a brow lift are typically long-lasting. However, it is critical to keep in mind that the aging process will continue and that additional procedures may be necessary in the future to maintain the results of the brow lift.

Browlift FAQs

How does a brow lift differ from a Botox treatment in the forehead area?

While both a brow lift and Botox can improve the appearance of forehead lines and drooping brows, they work very differently. Botox relaxes the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, offering temporary smoothing and subtle lift. A brow lift, on the other hand, surgically repositions the brow tissue and removes excess skin, providing a more dramatic and long-lasting result. A brow lift may be better if you’re looking for more permanent correction of sagging or asymmetrical brows. Dr. Steinbacher can help determine which treatment best matches your goals.

Can a brow lift change how my eyes look?

Yes—and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. A brow lift can subtly change the shape or openness of the eyes by elevating sagging tissue that may be pressing downward. This can create a more rested and alert appearance. However, a skilled surgeon like Dr. Steinbacher ensures the results look natural, not surprised or overdone. If you’re also concerned about the eyelids, a brow lift can be combined with blepharoplasty for more comprehensive rejuvenation.

Will a brow lift affect my hairline or forehead size?

It depends on the technique used. Some brow lifts involve incisions behind or along the hairline, which may slightly alter the forehead’s appearance. Dr. Steinbacher can modify the incision placement for patients with high foreheads to avoid increasing forehead height. He’ll carefully assess your hairline, facial proportions, and personal preferences to ensure the most flattering outcome with minimal visible scarring.  Through this approach he is able to advance or change the hairline for optimal proportions and forehead aesthetics.

Is there a risk of looking over-corrected or “pulled”?

When performed by an experienced facial surgeon, the risk of an unnatural or overly tight appearance is low. Dr. Steinbacher focuses on lifting the brow in a way that restores youthful positioning without distorting your facial expressions. At times immediately after surgery there is a greater lift as this tissue will relax with time, but this typically subsides into a subtle natural appearance.  His surgical approach emphasizes subtle enhancement rather than dramatic change, so you’ll still look like yourself, just more refreshed and energized.

How does brow position affect facial balance and symmetry?

Most people don’t realize how much their brow position influences the overall balance of their face. A low or uneven brow can make the face appear tired, sad, or asymmetrical. A brow lift helps restore facial harmony, especially in the upper third of the face, by elevating and repositioning the brows. Dr. Steinbacher evaluates your unique facial features and tailors the lift to ensure improved symmetry and aesthetic balance.

Can a brow lift improve tension headaches or forehead muscle strain?

In some cases, yes. Patients with low-hanging brows often compensate by unconsciously raising their eyebrows, leading to forehead muscle fatigue and tension headaches. The strain on these muscles may be reduced by lifting the brows to a more natural resting position. While not a cure for chronic migraines, a brow lift can offer unexpected functional relief for those experiencing forehead tension due to constant muscle engagement.

What should I consider when choosing a surgeon for a brow lift?

Experience matters—especially with a procedure requiring surgical skill and aesthetic judgment. Look for a surgeon who specializes in facial procedures and has a deep understanding of facial anatomy. Dr. Derek Steinbacher is a board-certified plastic surgeon and a leader in craniofacial and aesthetic surgery. His ability to customize each procedure to the patient’s natural features ensures elegant, balanced, and lasting results. In your consultation, he will review before-and-after photos, discuss your goals, and outline a detailed plan tailored to you.
