Change the Shape, Volume, and Appearance of Your Lips with Lip Lift Surgery

Are you concerned by the distance between the nose and upper lip? Upper lip lift surgery (lip augmentation) can provide a more youthful, attractive appearance. A lip lift can also reduce or eliminate the vertical lines, creases, or wrinkles on your lip. The lip lift procedure, skillfully performed by Dr. Derek Steinbacher, can provide a complete look without the use of injections or implants. And unlike injections or fillers, lip augmentation in Guilford, Connecticut, provides results that last a lifetime. You don’t have to spend money on repeat treatments.

Who is a good candidate for lip augmentation?

As we age, our lips lose their fullness. As a result, the distance between the nose tip and the upper lip (philtrum) widens, making our face look older. Besides age, some people have naturally thin lips and desire to change this to achieve great results.

The lip lift procedure is desirable for patients with a philtrum of more than 15 mm. The process aims to reduce this height by about one-third. However, the extent of reduction is subject to an examination by Dr. Steinbacher. Careful planning ensures we don’t overcorrect to maintain your natural shape.

What to expect from the procedure?

Lip enhancement is an outpatient procedure that lasts about 60 minutes. Before the treatment, we’ll anesthetize the inside of your mouth (mucosa) to reduce discomfort during treatment. Once you are comfortable, Dr. Steinbacher makes an incision beneath the nose to remove a small strip of skin called the “bullhorn” because of its shape. However, the shape and extent of this excision depend on the individual features.

Once we make the excision, we tighten the muscles and reposition the upper lip. After the procedure, we carefully suture the wound to ensure no visible scars are left after full recovery. The lip and cheek area will be swollen during the first few days after surgery. You may also experience mild pain, but this can be managed with over-the-counter painkillers and home remedies. You should also avoid strenuous activities during this period to allow healing.

Two weeks after surgery, your wound will be almost healed, and no scabs will be present. However, you need about 12 months for the scar to fade completely.

Upper Lip Lift Surgery FAQs

How does an upper lip lift differ from lip fillers, and when should I choose one over the other?

While both treatments enhance the appearance of the lips, they serve different purposes. Fillers add volume to the lips but don’t affect the space between the nose and upper lip. An upper lip lift shortens that space (the philtrum), improving lip shape and tooth show while offering a permanent enhancement. If you’re looking for subtle lift and definition rather than just fullness, or if filler results haven’t given the desired effect, a lip lift may be the better choice. Dr. Steinbacher will evaluate which approach—or combination—best suits your facial features.

Can a lip lift make my smile look more balanced or expressive?

Absolutely. Many people don’t realize how the length and position of the upper lip can influence how much of your teeth and gums show when you smile. A long upper lip can create a “hidden smile,” while a well-positioned lip reveals just the right amount of upper teeth for a youthful, engaging appearance. A lip lift helps improve this balance, often enhancing smile aesthetics without altering your natural expressions.

Will a lip lift affect how I apply lipstick or lip liner?

Yes, in a positive way. After a lip lift, the enhanced shape and defined border of your upper lip can make makeup application easier and more precise. Many patients find they need less product to achieve a fuller look. The vermilion (pink part of the lip) is also more visible, reducing the need for overlining. Dr. Steinbacher ensures the incision is discreetly placed so that once healed, your cosmetic routine becomes more streamlined, not more complicated.

Is a lip lift only for older patients, or can it be done at a younger age?

This procedure isn’t just for age-related changes. Some younger patients naturally have a long upper lip or minimal tooth show and want a more lifted, youthful look. Whether you’re looking to correct aging effects or enhance your facial proportions, a lip lift can be tailored to your anatomy and goals.  During your consultation, Dr. Steinbacher evaluates your lip-to-nose ratio, dental show, and aesthetic preferences to determine the best timing and approach.

How does the shape of my nose or chin affect the outcome of a lip lift?

The upper lip doesn’t exist in isolation. It’s part of your overall facial harmony. A well-done lip lift considers your nose, chin, midface profile, and proportions. Dr. Steinbacher has specialized training in facial balance and will assess how a lip lift can best complement your existing features. Patients may sometimes benefit from pairing the procedure with rhinoplasty or chin contouring to achieve even more balanced results.

What is the recovery experience like, and how long before I can be seen in public?

Swelling, mild bruising, and tightness are common for the first 7–10 days. While most patients feel well enough to return to daily activities quickly, some prefer a week of downtime for the initial healing phase. Makeup can usually be applied after suture removal. Dr. Steinbacher provides detailed aftercare instructions, and because the incision is placed at the base of the nose, it is typically well-concealed within natural creases.

Will a lip lift change how I speak, smile, or eat?

Temporary tightness is common during early recovery, but most patients return to normal speaking and eating within a few days. The procedure does not change muscle function, so your smile, speech, and lip movement will remain natural once healed.  Many patients find that their smiles look more confident and engaging. Dr. Steinbacher’s meticulous technique ensures both aesthetic and functional harmony.
